Lawton MacArthur senior Shaun Hughes added another big moment to his throwing résumé Saturday, winning the 2026 OSSAA Class 5A boys shot put state championship at the 5A/6A State Track & Field Championships at Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City.

Hughes captured the title with a winning throw of 59 feet, 3 inches, giving MacArthur a state champion in one of Class 5A’s premier field events. The result also continued Hughes’ strong run as one of Oklahoma’s top throwers in the Class of 2026. MileSplit lists Hughes with a high school shot put personal record of 61-11 and a discus PR of 172-11, showing the consistency and power he has built across both throws.

The top three finishers in Saturday’s Class 5A boys shot put were:

1st - Shaun Hughes, Sr. Lawton MacArthur High School 59’-3”. 2nd - Brayden Palmer, Jr. of Blanchard High School 54’-11”. 3rd - Andrew Harris, Sr. Bishop McGuinness High School 53’-9”

Hughes finished more than four feet ahead of the field, with Blanchard’s Brayden Palmer taking runner-up honors at 54-11 and Bishop McGuinness senior Andrew Harris placing third at 53-9. Colby Watson of Grove was just behind the podium in fourth at 53-8.50.

Saturday’s victory also gave Hughes another state level highlight after he was listed by KSWO as the 2025 Class 5A boys shot put state champion with a throw of 58-7.5, along with a runner-up finish in the discus that same year.

For MacArthur, Hughes’ performance delivered a statement finish in the throws and added another championship moment to a strong high school career. With a winning mark of 59-3 and a personal best history beyond 61 feet, Hughes closed his senior season as one of the standout power athletes in Oklahoma high school track and field.
