Athlete Spotlight: Gage Gibbons – Speed, Leadership, and a Championship Mindset

Gage Gibbons | Deer Creek High School | Football & Track | Class of 2027

When people talk about explosive athletes in Oklahoma, Deer Creek's Gage Gibbons is quickly becoming a name that belongs in the conversation.

The rising senior is a dual sport standout for the Deer Creek Antlers, making plays on Friday nights as a slot receiver and defensive safety while dominating on the track as one of the fastest athletes in the state.

Standing 5’ 9” and weighing 175 pounds, Gibbons combines elite speed, relentless work ethic, and leadership qualities that make him a valuable asset both on and off the field.

Built for Big Moments

Gibbons' junior football season showcased his versatility and ability to impact the game in multiple ways.

  • 61 Receptions

  • 682 Receiving Yards

  • 5 Receiving Touchdowns

Whether lined up in the slot creating mismatches or helping anchor the Deer Creek secondary at safety, Gibbons consistently found ways to contribute. His athleticism extends well beyond the football field.

One of Oklahoma's Fastest

Track has provided another stage for Gibbons to showcase his elite speed. His biggest athletic accomplishment to date came when he captured back-to-back Oklahoma Class 6A State Championships in the 100-meter dash.

Track Accomplishments

For Gibbons, winning consecutive state championships remains the defining moment of his athletic career. "Winning the Oklahoma 6A 100-meter State Championship back-to-back in 2025 and 2026," Gibbons said when asked about his biggest moment in sports.

How It Started

Like many athletes, Gibbons discovered his passion early.

"At a young age I started with flag football and I was hooked," he said.

That passion has evolved into a year-round commitment that includes speed development, weight training, football practice, and a disciplined recovery routine.

"Speed training, weight lifting, football practice, and extreme focus on recovery" make up his training regimen.

Leading by Example

I asked Gibbons what coaches should know about him immediately and his answer says a lot about who he is.

"I put others first before me. I'm coachable. I'm a leader on and off the field."

Those qualities are reflected in the way he approaches leadership within the Deer Creek program.

"I want to set an example for my teammates and those who look up to me."

The biggest sacrifice has been giving up free time to pursue his goals, but it's a challenge he willingly accepts in pursuit of excellence.

Faith, Family, and Mentorship

Gibbons credits two important mentors for helping shape his athletic journey.

Coach Joel helps him focus on the positives and build confidence through competition, while Coach James helps keep him grounded in his faith during the highs and lows that come with sports. Those influences have helped him develop into a well-rounded athlete and person.

Looking Toward the Future

While his immediate goal is helping Deer Creek compete at a high level during his senior season, Gibbons has his sights set on playing college football after graduation. Beyond athletics, he hopes to pursue a career as a petroleum engineer.

For younger athletes coming behind him, his message is simple:

"Trust the process no matter how hard it gets."
