There are athletes who stand out because of size, speed, or statistics. Then there are athletes whose story carries just as much weight as what they do on the field.

For Carl Albert High School football standout Makauri Johnson, the game means far more than touchdowns and tackles. It represents resilience, faith, family, and proving that setbacks don’t define your future.

At 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, the Class of 2027 athlete has become one of the rising names in Oklahoma high school football after helping lead Carl Albert to a state championship season. Playing wide receiver and defensive secondary roles, Johnson delivered impact plays on both sides of the football while continuing to grow into one of the Titans’ key playmakers.

Built Through Adversity

Johnson’s path to success began with one of the biggest challenges a young athlete can face.

“After almost losing my leg and being told I wouldn’t be able to do anything, it motivated me to prove them wrong,” Johnson said.

That moment changed everything.

What could have become the end of an athletic dream instead became fuel. Johnson credits surviving that difficult period — along with a major knee surgery recovery — as the defining moment of his life so far.

“God bringing me back from almost losing my leg and knee surgery,” he said when asked about the biggest moment in his journey.

Now, every rep, sprint, workout, and game carries deeper meaning.

State Championship Production

Johnson’s junior season showcased both his versatility and athletic upside during Carl Albert’s championship run.

Junior Season Highlights

  • 22 receptions

  • 425 receiving yards

  • 19 yards per catch

  • 4 touchdowns

  • 12 total tackles

  • 1 pass breakup

  • 1 interception

The combination of size, athleticism, and physicality makes Johnson a matchup problem offensively while also allowing him to contribute defensively.

His ability to stretch the field vertically and create explosive plays helped Carl Albert continue its tradition as one of Oklahoma’s premier football programs.

The Daily Grind

Johnson’s development hasn’t happened by accident.

His training routine reflects the mentality of an athlete chasing the next level.

“Train every day, rest on Saturday,” he said. “Speed, strength, plyos, and wide receiver work.”

That consistency has helped him continue building confidence while preparing for the recruiting process ahead.

One of the toughest parts of that process, however, has been remaining patient.

“Keeping a positive mindset when offers haven’t rolled in yet,” Johnson admitted when discussing his biggest challenge.

Even through uncertainty, Johnson continues to focus on the work rather than the distractions.

Leadership and Influence

As his role within the program grows, Johnson understands the responsibility that comes with younger athletes watching him.

“Leadership means a lot because it feels good to know people follow after you,” he said.

That mindset reflects the influence of the person he credits most in his life — his father.

“My father because I couldn’t do anything without him.”

Family remains central to who Johnson is both on and off the field.

He describes himself as “1 of 18 kids,” the youngest boy in the family, and says he values food, family, and friendships as much as football itself.

Beyond Football

While football is the current focus, Johnson is also thinking long term about life after the game.

His interests include engineering, physical therapy, and potentially becoming a trainer or coach in the future.

For now, though, the immediate goal remains clear:

“Go to college on a full ride scholarship.”

With his size, athletic profile, work ethic, and perseverance, Johnson is positioning himself to continue attracting attention as his recruitment develops.

It’s about overcoming doubt, trusting the process, staying mentally strong, and refusing to let adversity determine the outcome.

From nearly losing his leg to helping bring a state championship to Carl Albert, Johnson continues to show what perseverance looks like in real time.

And as his journey continues, one thing is already clear — he’s only getting started.
